{"id":2751,"date":"2026-08-07T11:36:28","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T10:36:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iamas.org\/irc\/?page_id=2751"},"modified":"2026-08-07T11:36:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T10:36:28","slug":"a-tribute-to-eugene-rozanov-1955-2026","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.iamas.org\/irc\/a-tribute-to-eugene-rozanov-1955-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"A Tribute to Eugene Rozanov (1955-2026)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear colleague, mentor, and friend, Dr. Eugene Rozanov, on 25 July 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eugene dedicated over forty years to advancing our understanding of Earth&#8217;s atmosphere and climate. His research made fundamental contributions to atmospheric physics, chemistry, ozone science, climate modeling, and the impact of solar variability on the Earth system. As a pioneer in chemistry\u2013climate modeling, he helped develop Earth system models that have become indispensable tools for climate research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout his distinguished career, Eugene served the international scientific community in many roles. He was a Lead Author of the WMO Ozone Assessments and contributed to the IPCC, whose efforts earned the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He also played key roles in numerous international scientific initiatives, including SCOSTEP, SPARC, and COST, and received the SCOSTEP Medal in 2023 for his outstanding scientific achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For over twenty years, Eugene led the Climate Group at PMOD\/WRC in Davos. Under his leadership, the group gained international recognition for its scientific excellence as well as its collaborative and welcoming environment. He was an exceptional mentor who motivated generations of students and young scientists, always generous with his time, ideas, and support. Working with Eugene, one always felt that no scientific challenge was too difficult. Even the most ambitious ideas and daunting projects somehow became exciting, feasible, and within reach. Many of his former students and collaborators now carry on his scientific legacy in research institutions around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who knew Eugene will remember not only his remarkable scientific insight but also his kindness, generosity, curiosity, and sense of humour. He had an extraordinary ability to connect people, foster collaborations, and make even the most challenging scientific discussions enjoyable. Whether in the office, at conferences, or over dinner with colleagues, his enthusiasm for science was contagious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Above all, Eugene valued his family. Our deepest sympathies are with his beloved wife, Tatiana, his daughter, Eva, and his sons, Platon and Roman, during this difficult time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eugene&#8217;s legacy persists through his scientific contributions, the models and ideas he helped develop, and the many colleagues, students, and friends whose lives he touched.
