The SOLAS Summer School is a key initiative of the highly recognized international consortium SOLAS and strives to train the next generation of global passionate young scientists dedicated to understanding and solving the challenges facing our coupled atmosphere-ocean system.
One of the main goals of SOLAS summer school is to serve Global South students and foster international collaborations among early career scientists. In early Spring 2026, we will celebrate SOLAS 10th Summer School, with a unique extended program, designed to equip early career scientists from around the world with the knowledge and skills to become leaders in research at the cross section of atmosphere and ocean sciences, with an emphasis on climate solutions.
Widely recognized within the field of atmosphere-ocean research, the SOLAS Summer School boasts a distinguished alumni network. Over its nine iterations, the program has fostered the development of over 600 graduate students and early career scientists who now play leading roles in academia, NGOs, industry and climate governance around the world. The summer school creates a sense of belonging within the air-sea science community and many of SOLAS current members are former Summer School students.
Building on this legacy of excellence, we are thrilled to announce the upcoming SOLAS summer school in early Spring 2026. The new enhanced program will provide an immersive learning experience, focused on hands-on learning and project ownership. Recognizing the importance of practical experience, the 2026 program will be extended from 2 to 3 weeks to allow for a deeper dive into project-based work. Example topics to be covered relevant to meteorology and atmospheric science include the bi-directional fluxes of gases and aerosols across the air-sea interface and role of climate change in perturbing those fluxes and related impacts such as changes to temperature, precipitation, clouds, and winds.
Previous SOLAS Summer Schools have been held in France, China and more recently in Cabo Verde. For the first time the Summer School will be held in the Southern Hemisphere in Brazil and will have a specific focus on the South American scientific community. The Summer School with then rotate and take place in Asia and Africa over the following iterations to reach a wider possible audience.
This year we will spotlight research and mentorship from South American lecturers as well as early-to-mid career mentors. The beautiful coastal location in North Brazil offers exciting project-based opportunities in atmosphere-ocean interactions, including remote sensing, modelling, air quality, coral health monitoring, mangrove and other blue carbon studies and at-sea experimental experiences. The students will have the opportunity to present their work and interact with local stakeholders.
This will also be the opportunity to launch the SOLAS mentorship program, a new initiative from the SOLAS ECSC, to enhance SOLAS community and skill sharing, international student exchange and diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility initiatives.
