24–28 Nov 2025, Polytechnic School, University of Cheikh Anta Diop, Dakar, Senegal
The Workshop will focus on process-oriented evaluation and analysis of reanalysis products, observations, and weather and climate model simulations as well applications of novel methods in Data Science such as Machine Learning and AI techniques for weather and climate research. The lead organizer is Dr. Mohamadou Diallo, an APARC Scientific Outreach Officer from Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany (which hosts the APARC IPO), with support from Prof. Amadou Gaye, Prof. Theodore Shepherd, and
Prof. Michaela Hegglin. The proposed activity follows on from a very successful Training School on AI for Climate Science organized by the same team at the University of Rwanda immediately following the WCRP Open Science Conference in Kigali in October 2023
The objectives are to build on existing climate services and improve access to user-relevant information at sub-seasonal to decadal scales throughout the Global South.
Intended workshop themes include:
- Global and Regional Climate and Weather Modeling
- Weather and Climate Predictability and Prediction
- Climate Change, Climate Variability, Hazards and Extreme Events
- Interactions of Atmospheric Composition and Climate
- In-situ and Satellite Observations for Societal Benefits and Decision Making
- Capacity Building for Climate Services and Distribution of User-Relevant Information
- Climate Storylines for Actionable Regional Climate Information
- Green Energy Systems for Climate resilience (sustainable development)
