Urgent: Survey to prepare ICCP discussion

You are receiving this email to request your participation in a survey about DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion). We are a group of international scientists from the cloud physics community, aiming to understand if and how DEI has influenced various aspects of the cloud physics community, such as collaborations and gender balance. We would appreciate it if you could take a few minutes (~10 mins) to fill in the following survey to collect information that will help us understand the current state of DEI in our community.

The survey will remain open until midnight 04 August 2021. The results from the survey are expected to be presented in the upcoming ICCP meeting, and therefore, we would greatly appreciate it if you can participate before the aforementioned date.

Please click here to access the survey. The Survey is completely anonymous to keep your privacy. We kindly ask you to fill up the survey once. This study has been approved by Texas Tech University Institutional Review Boards (IRB). You may contact the Human Research Protection Program at Texas Tech University for any questions regarding the rights of participants. Their phone number is +1(806)-742-2064, and their email is hrpp@ttu.edu.
Do not hesitate to contact us at the following email if you have questions: cloud.physics.survey@gmail.com

AGU Fall Meeting session on “Lagrangian and Climatological Transitions of Warm Boundary Layer Clouds”

We invite your contribution to our AGU Fall Meeting session on “Lagrangian and Climatological Transitions of Warm Boundary Layer Clouds.” We seek a balance of observational and modeling-oriented perspectives and studies that integrate results across multiple platforms/field campaigns. We particularly welcome submissions from early-career scientists and members of underrepresented groups in atmospheric/climate science. Please consider submitting an abstract to session A070 — the deadline for submission is August 4th.

Session Confirmed Invited Speakers: Timothy Myers (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) and Louise Nuijens (Delft University of Technology).

We look forward to meeting you, virtually or in person, at AGU!

Regards,
Isabel McCoy (U Miami/UCAR)
Mikael Witte (NPS/UCLA/JPL)
Mark Smalley (UCLA/JPL)

A070. Lagrangian and Climatological Transitions of Warm Boundary Layer Clouds
Transitions of boundary layer cloudiness (e.g. from stratocumulus to cumulus, closed to open mesoscale cellular convection, etc.) are an important aspect of the climate system and have proven difficult to accurately simulate in both small and large scale models, revealing a fundamental gap in our understanding of both micro- and macro-scale atmospheric physics. In this session, we invite observational and modeling studies that expand our understanding of the interactions between meteorology, clouds, precipitation, radiation, aerosols, and turbulence that influence cloud transitions in areas of subtropical subsidence, post-frontal mid-latitude systems, and other significant low-lying warm cloud regimes. We especially encourage papers studying the Lagrangian and climatological transition between cloud organizational structures that utilize the wealth of information provided through combining satellite observations, modeling frameworks, and observations from multiple recent field campaigns (e.g. CAP-MBL, MAGIC, CSET, ACE-ENA, ORACLES, EUREC4A/ATOMIC, COMBLE, ACTIVATE).

IRS 2022 Thessaloniki

With great pleasure we announce that the next International Radiation Symposium (IRS), originally planned for July 2020 and postponed twice due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, will be held from 4-8 July, 2022 in Thessaloniki, Greece. IRS2022 is organized by the International Radiation Commission (IRC), the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS) and the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh). IRS2022 will provide a comprehensive international forum for presenting and discussing recent research achievements and technological developments on atmospheric radiation and related disciplines. You are cordially invited to attend the symposium to present your scientific work and exchange ideas with top scientists in the Atmospheric Radiation community. IRS2022 will offer keynote presentations under the Topical Union Session, parallel paper presentations, and poster sessions.

The Symposium comprises the following sessions:

  • Topical Union Session
  • Radiative Transfer Theory and Modeling
  • Particle Radiative Properties
  • General Remote Sensing
  • Ground-based Measurements and Field Observations
  • Radiation Budget and Forcing
  • Weather, Climate and Environment Applications
  • Solar UV Radiation
  • Ocean Optics
  • Climate Change in the Mediterranean and Radiative Impacts of a Changing Environment

Submission of Abstracts will be open from 1 September through 15 December 2021. Please look for details at the symposium’s website: https://www.irs2022.org/preparation-of-abstracts/. Please note that all abstracts submitted to IRS2020 must be submitted again.

Registration will open starting on 1 September 2021 at: https://www.irs2022.org/register-now/.

Please pass this announcement on to interested colleagues, especially newcomers to the field.

Looking forward to welcoming you in Thessaloniki.

to honor our friends that passed away

Our ICCP conference is only a month away. You should have received by now a notification of acceptance of your submissions. As the entire conference will be held online, the oral presentations are only 5 min long and regrouped in a few hours to take into account ime zones. However, longer talks can also be uploaded for further material. Posters will be handled via iposter, and social acitivites via “wonder” and “gather” platforms. We try to provide numerous platforms for discussion and contact. Details will appear on the Pune conference web page soon.

During the last 5 years, we lost an important number of colleages that we would like to honor during the conference. Below, please find the names of those that we are aware of. If we missed someone, please bring them to our attention:

John Latham, Harry T. Ochs III, Hans R. Pruppacher, Ken Beard, Dr Constantin Andronache, Professor Paul Smith, John Christian Pflaum, Roddy Rhodes ROGERS, Prof. Roland List, , John Hallett, Dr. Roscoe Braham, Griffith Morgan Jr, Dr. Takeshi Ohtake, Professor Jón Egill Kristjánsson

message from the IAMAS ECS committee

Dear Colleagues and students,

I would like to draw your attention to a new Early Career Scientist (ECS) network and mailing list that the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS) has just established. The focus of this network is to promote international communication and collaboration of early career scientists globally. It is managed by our IAMAS ECS committee (https://www.iamas.org/ecs/), which consists of ten early career scientists representing the ten IAMAS commissions and different regions globally.
We will organize regular monthly webinars, ECS sessions at IAMAS and IUGG assemblies, and many other support and networking activities. If you are an early career scientist (defined as under 40 years old or within 10 years of obtaining your highest degree) and are interested in learning more about our events and activities, please sign up to join our mailing list at https://www.iamas.org/ecs/, by clicking on the blue button “Join the IAMAS ECS mailing list”.
If you have questions, or want to be actively involved in the IAMAS ECS network, please send an email to ECS.IAMAS.org@gmail.com
We look forward to having you in our community!
Sincerely,
Odran Sourdeval, on behalf of the IAMAS ECS committee
