iCACGP has four primary objectives in representing the atmospheric chemistry community within the IUGG framework as a Commission of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS):
- To promote core research on atmospheric chemistry and composition, their contributions to air pollution and climate, and their effects on humans and the biogeosphere by encouraging international communication through:
- The organization of a biennial science conference with the IGAC Project and of sessions with the SOLAS conference.
- The support of IAMAS and IUGG overarching scientific objectives and strategy, including the organization of relevant symposia at their assemblies.
- The collaboration with other international organizations involved in atmospheric chemistry and global air pollution research, including IGAC, SOLAS, iLEAPS, APARC, GAW, and COSPAR, by participating in business meetings of each group.
- The publication of position statements to identify and document gaps in knowledge and emerging topics.
- To identify and promote research projects and programs in this field that are underpinned by international cooperation through:
- Providing support letters for major international collaborative research activities.
- Helping to coordinate advocacy for addressing atmospheric chemistry and global air pollution research.
- Furthering the links between the atmospheric chemistry community and wider earth system science communities.
- To encourage the participation of students and early career scientists in atmospheric chemistry and global air pollution international research through:
- The interactions with early career researchers (ECRs) via their ECR conferences and functions promoting interactions between early, mid, and late career scientists.
- The facilitation of travel grants and financial support for ECRs to attend conferences and workshops.
- The selection of the Paul Crutzen Early Career Award and the nomination of ECRs for similar awards given by IAMAS and IUGG.
- The participation of ECR liaisons in the iCACGP meetings and activities.
- To increase diversity of perspectives in atmospheric chemistry and global air pollution research.
- Having geographic and demographic diversity in iCACGP meetings and activities.
- Nomination on other committees of underrepresented groups and communities from different regions of the world.
- Facilitation of activities that require broad geographical representation.
