This year’s recipient of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS) Early Career Medal is Dr. Marta Abalos. This medal was established in 2015, and is presented every two years, from a selection of candidates nominated by one of the commissions of IAMAS or the Members at-Large.The medal ceremony will come with a presentation on her work at the upcoming Virtual Atmosphere-Cryosphere-Ocean seminar series (VACO-21) in July 2021.
Paul J. Crutzen (1933-2021), a recognised world leader in atmospheric sciences, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry (1995), Director of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (1980-2000), and Honorary Member of the International Ozone Commission of IAMAS. An obituary can be found here.
We are very sad to hear that Prof Konrad Steffen has died while carrying out fieldwork in Greenland. Koni provided outstanding leadership within the polar science community over many years and is be sadly missed.
We are delighted to announce that Dr. Jing Li of Peking University, China will be joining the Bureau of IAMAS as our Early Career Representative. Jing will be involved in the day-to-day running of our association and helping to promote the activities of IAMAS and its commissions amongst the next generation of atmospheric scientists. Dr. Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick will be joining Jing in IAMAS efforts to promote early career scientists.
Congratulations to Lei Bi, Department of Atmospheric Sciences School of Earth Sciences, Zhejiang University, on being awarded the 2019 IAMAS Early Career Scientist Medal.

On February 12, Dr. Warren Washington, credited as having ‘Literally wrote the book on climate modeling’, has been announced as the winner of the ‘Nobel Prize for the Environment’, the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement. Dr. Washington is the first African American to win this prestigious 46-year-old Prize.
Continue readingIAMAS is sorry to announce the passing on 26 January 2019 of Prof. Roland List, the distinguished cloud physicist and former Secretary General of IAMAS. Roland had a long and highly successful career in the atmospheric sciences and also contributed to international cooperation and coordination of meteorology through his service to IAMAS and via the World Meteorological Organisation, where he was Deputy Secretary General in the 1980s.
